Volkswagen Crafter 2017 Long Wheel Base High Roof

We designed the fit out specifically for living long-term and working on the road while remaining stealthy. There are no external signs of camper van living, no gas doors, no side awning, no bulky extractor fans or prominent solar panels, even the shore power plug is invisible.

You can literally pull up anywhere and sleep and no one is the wiser generally speaking.

SCOTTY Winner of the Defence Innovation Award 2021

Scotty by Safiery is the jewel in the crown of this solar system. Anytime you need to refill the batteries, simply turn on the engine (or go for a drive) and Scotty will turbocharge the process.

We went through a whole winter in Jindabyne (3 months) on no shore power. We ran the 2 x floor heating membranes every night (lush!), and then used the sun on the panels all day +  Scotty for an hour, to get back to base.

We have lived full-time in the van for almost 2 years and have enjoyed every minute.

• Marine ply fitout with 9mm ply, routed to look like Tongue & Groove treated with bees wax on the walls and ceiling
• Clear lacquered 12mm ply for cabinetry with push button door latches for travelling and dark grey granite patterned laminate for tops

An Abundance of Easy-to-Access Storage

We comfortably live and work on the road, cook every meal & store everything we need for summer and winter adventures. There’s plenty of room. 

Comfortable Transforming Sleeping Platform

The bed platform is full width 1800L x 1340W x 900H, covered in black carpet. We use rubber martial arts matting under futons but you can create whatever bedding you desire. The rubber can be used as flooring when camping as its very easy to clean off at the end of your stay.

The bed transforms into a Teppanyaki table 1475L x 420W with space for your legs underneath which is 230mm deep.

There are two drop hatches 280L x 420W x 270D under the bed, easily accessed from the front, for your blankets.

Enormous Slide-Out Garage

To ensure we could fit every gadget for an adventurous lifestyle we built a gigantic garage with roll-out drawer which is 1490D x 1165W x 35 lip in a space that is 1490D x 1305W x 590H.

The drawer locks at both halfway out and fully out and is strong enough to climb on.

Above the garage are:

• Two lockable, 1485D x 425W x 265H, carpet-lined draws with pop-out trays and Teflon
• Lockable cubby hole 336D x 430W x 210H
• Slide out table1244D x 424W x 44 thick top with pop out and adjustable legs (590H to 990H)

Never underestimate the dimmer. There’s nothing worse than coming in from a dark, star filled sky next to the fire to searing white fluorescents.

Turn your ambers on and dim down to the lowest for the most luxurious welcome as you come in at night and slip into bed.

To be honest, the entire space was designed around these amazing quality, high-fidelity Bluetooth speakers & the extra expense for these Kef speakers was well worth it as they are perfect for the size and shape of the space.

Bang out your favourite tunes as you cook your evening meal or play a movie through the swing-out monitor with the soundscape pumping. Epic times.

Bushman DC 130L Fridge

Designed specifically for camping, this fridge will hold your goodies in, even if you’re on a lean. The freezer & the crisper are enough for two people. The flip over grates in every tray allows you to retrofit the space to your needs.

Depending on your diet, you could go for a week before having to fill up again, but we tend to graze shop at every town visit. Farmer’s markets around the country are always a treat; the size of the fridge sometimes the only thing stopping you from over shopping.

Cleaning needs to be done more regularly than a household fridge but the small space makes it simple and somewhat enjoyable.

Built-in Nature’s Head Compost Toilet

The onboard compost toilet is entirely pleasant to use and very convenient for stealth camping. Even with the curtains down during the day, you are not able to be seen from outside while you use the toilet. 

It is situated in a box with ties for the lid which can be used for a seat.

There is never odour unless it’s time to change the peat which is usually every 6 weeks and the urinal is changed every 2 days.

There is no internal shower but space is left for a water heating unit and shower off the back, if that is your desire. We lived in it for almost two years and didn’t once miss a shower. Gyms and swimming pools suffice in cities and natural water courses are always wonderful. We chose not to fit water tanks as we found the jerry can system most convenient. No need to check into a caravan park for water. Fill up at any service station and know that you can park at any Free Parking stop which stipulates self-contained.
